Good News

I’ve had a little hiatus from weaving as I have undergone several weeks of eye surgeries. I celebrated a good report from my retina doc with weaving for an animal loving friend. All of her animals are black so they presented a photoshop challenge but, all in all, they turned out pretty well. I have some needle weaving to do – a couple of heddles are misbehaving and I just can’t see well enough to fix them yet. Maybe in 7 or 8 weeks I’ll give it a go.

Anyway, these are 5 value black and white Venne cottolin double weave in twill. I generally do plain weave on the back to manage the draw in a little bit. It seems like most people use shaded satins in a single layer to do image weaving. Maybe I will do that sometime but I’m enjoying playing with those layers in double weave – especially when adding color.

I made an 11 swatch sample to check out the relative values of black weft over white and white weft over black and the appearance of black over black and white over white.

Here’s the sample. It goes: [1] white weft on white plain weave, [2] white weft on white 2/2 twill, [3] white weft on black 3/1 twill, [4] black weft on white 1/3 twill, [5] white weft on black 2/2 twill, [6] black weft on white plain weave, [7] black weft on white 2/2 twill, [8] white weft on black 1/3 twill, [9] black weft on white 3/1 twill, [10] black weft on black 2/2 twill, and [11] black weft on black plain weave. The white and grey rectangles mark the sample color change. I used 2, 4, 5, 8 and 10.

As I mentioned, I have some needle weaving and wet finishing to do but that might take a while so here are the images in process. For this first one I had some creative photoshop to do to combine several images to get this composition. I wanted to show my friend – she just loves her horse and it shows. Usually I weave images from paintings but these come from modified photos.

Here’s a look at the AdaCAD screen. Take note of the new SELECTOR operator. This lets you option drafts in the workflow without reconnecting all of the nodes. I am not taking advantage of it on this project since I wanted all of my potential twill values to show at once but I have used it on other projects and it is a game changer. Thanks to Laura and the Unstable Design Lab for tweaks that make life easier in AdaCAD.
