PVC Preparations

With the loom on the way the preparations have taken on a new urgency. We decided to put the pump in the basement to manage the noise and conserve study space. To make that work we have run PVC pipe (2 inch schedule 40) from the basement, around the stairs to a vertical shaft in an old abandoned fireplace flue. The pipe travels up the shaft to the attic where it passes along the underside of the roof to the point where we will drop down above the loom.

After a crash course on the Home Depot web site we collected our materials:

  • 2″ pipe – 7 x 10′ long
  • elbows – 6
  • extenders – 4
  • PVC cleaner
  • PVC purple primer
  • PVC cement
  • burr remover
  • hose clamps

We cut the pipe to length with a chop saw in our shop but for those without tools, there are tools available that are made to cut the pipe with minimal effort. We will connect the loom and the pump to the PVC with the supplied flexible hose. At this point we have run the PVC for about half of the path we defined but, given the geometry, we can make it work as is if we don’t get enough time to finish.

The job was pretty straightforward and, hopefully, should get us where we need to be. Counting the days now with just some tidying up in the loom’s final spot to go.
