Square Bubbles

It had been a while since I wove on Big Sister, my 32 shaft Megado loom – since the summer when I wove fabric for a retirement celebration vest that I wore to Complex Weavers Seminars and HGA’s Convergence Fashion Show last summer.

Anyway, back to the story. I have been having a great time weaving on my new TC2 and my Louet Delta (Little Sister) – mostly weaving samples for the class I teach at Callanwolde. Big Sister was getting a little miffed.

I wanted to weave something fun and a little retro. The loom was threaded for Summer and Winter – I don’t think I will ever get tired of S&W, it was my first floor loom structure and I go back to it time and time again. I developed a polychrome design, picked some Euroflax colors from my stash and went to it. After a few repeats of a 200 or so pick pattern I decided to mix it up a little bit and rethink the color change approach. I kept the weft color order the same but alternated or varied the color order so that the position of the weft colors changed as I went along.

Here’s where it ended up and I can say I have a couple of yards of something I really like.

It is hard to see the shimmer on these photos but that linen really gleams.

Here’s a bigger view where you might see some of the changes a little better.

I need a bedspread and was wondering what I could do with a double width polychrome summer and winter draft on my 44″ TC2. I think I could have a lot of fun playing with the scale and configuration of the bubbles on a piece of cloth that big. Handling the fold and whatever else comes with 2 layers on that loom would also be interesting. Then again, I could thread up Big Sister and piece it together to get the size I need since I really need all of those shafts for the pattern. A double layer would be a no go on that loom in that design.
